Clive Woodley, Principal Scientist and QinetiQ Fellow, Weapons Technologies Department.Prisident, International Ballistic Society.Clive Woodley is aworld expert on the mathematical modelling of the internal ballistics of gunsand, in particular, modelling the ignition and combustion of energeticmaterials. He has contributed to the internal ballistics modelling of manyof the gun systems used by the UK Armed Forces. Clive recentlyapplied his knowledge of the ignition and burning characteristics of gunpropellants to the development of tools to predict the Insensitive Munition(IM) response of explosive-filled stores – providing critical insight intounderstanding the ‘burn to violent reaction’ mechanism in explosive materials. His work hasincluded developing innovative numerical modelling techniques to assess therisks and potential performance gains of novel gun systems, such as liquidpropellant guns and electric guns. Clive’s pioneering multi-phase flowmodelling techniques for accurately predicting the ignition and combustion ofpropellants are now being extended to pyrotechnic flares and the hazardresponse of energetic materials. The first personin the world to identify enhanced combustion of propellants due to plasma,Clive led the successful development of ground-breaking theories to model andunderstand the phenomenon. Clive’s otheraccomplishments include:1.Leading a TTCPcollaborative programme, involving Australia, Canada, the UK and the US, ontwo-phase flow interior ballistic modelling.2. Pioneeringmodelling techniques to simulate the ignition and combustion of modular chargesystems.3.Advising the MoDDE&S on critical procurement and in-service issues, resulting in safer andbetter-performing weapons systems. 4.An industrypartnership with Fraser-Nash Consultancy has resulted in acommercially-available software product containing a variant of Clive’sinternal ballistics simulation tools, which is currently being purchased by anumber of international defence organisations. Clive is frequently invited tochair technical sessions at the International Symposium on Ballistics, and heis President and Membership Chair of the International Ballistics Society. I hope you will alljoin me in giving a warm welcoming to him, I believe our journal will be moresuccessful under everyone's support.
